School of the Prophets – Episode 12: Role of the Prophet in the Church
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:11 that God gave prophets to the Church… But for what purpose? In this teaching, you will learn: The true role of a prophet in the Church The difference between the prophetic gift and the prophetic office How prophets function alongside pastors and leaders Why prophets are often misunderstood The dangers of false expectations How the prophetic brings alignment, correction, and direction Key Scriptures: Ephesians 4:11–13 1 Corinthians 14:3 Amos 3:7 Training Focus: Structure, Function, Leadership Alignment If you’ve ever: Wondered what prophets are supposed to do in the church Been confused by modern prophetic ministry Seen misuse or misunderstanding of the prophetic Wanted clarity on your role or calling This message will bring understanding.
One of the greatest misunderstandings in modern Christianity concerns the role of the prophet within the local church.
Some view prophets as spiritual celebrities.
Others view prophets as fortune tellers.
Still others reject prophetic ministry altogether because of abuses they have witnessed.
Yet Scripture presents a very different picture.
The prophet was never intended to replace the pastor.
The prophet was never intended to control the church.
The prophet was never intended to become the center of attention.
The prophet's assignment is to serve Christ and strengthen His Body.
A healthy prophet helps the Church:
Hear God's voice
Maintain spiritual sensitivity
Discern seasons and directions
Call people back to God
Equip the saints
Confirm God's purposes
The prophet is not above the Church.
The prophet is part of the Church.
The prophet is not an independent kingdom unto himself.
The prophet functions within God's divine order.
Many prophetic problems begin when prophets lose sight of their purpose.
When the focus shifts from serving Christ to building personal influence, prophetic ministry becomes distorted.
A mature prophet understands that his or her role is not to gather followers.
It is to point people to Jesus.
The true measure of prophetic ministry is not how many people follow the prophet.
The true measure is how many people follow Christ more closely because of the prophet's ministry.

MEMORY VERSES
Ephesians 4:11-12
"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets..."
1 Corinthians 14:3
"But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men."
John 3:30
"He must increase, but I must decrease."
Memorize and meditate on these verses this week.
FINAL CHALLENGE
The prophet's greatest assignment is not predicting events.
It is helping people draw closer to Christ.
Many want the microphone.
Few want the towel.
Many want influence.
Few want servanthood.
The question is not:
"Am I called to be a prophet?"
The deeper question is:
"Am I willing to serve God's people the way Christ intended?"
Because healthy prophetic ministry does not build the prophet.
It builds the Church.
And when the Church is strengthened, Christ is glorified.
"The prophet's highest calling is not to stand above the Church, but to serve within it.
The greatest prophets are not known for how many people follow them, but for how faithfully they point people to Jesus."
