Hearing & Speaking for God: How to Know It’s Really Him | Ep. 9

The challenge is learning how He speaks.

God speaks through:

Scripture

The Holy Spirit

Dreams

Visions

Impressions

Convictions

Circumstances

Wise counsel

The issue is not that God is silent.

The issue is that our spiritual ears often become crowded by fear, emotions, assumptions, distractions, and personal desires.

The mature prophet learns to slow down.

To listen.

To test.

To discern.

And to speak only what God is actually saying.

The goal is not merely hearing God's voice.

The goal is representing His voice accurately.

"God's voice is rarely discovered in haste. The prophet who learns to listen carefully will speak with greater confidence, greater accuracy, and greater humility."

PROPHETIC LAB

Lab Objective

To develop biblical discernment and learn practical principles for hearing, testing, interpreting, and communicating God's voice responsibly.

ACTIVATION 1 — Voice Recognition

Read:

John 10:27

"My sheep hear My voice..."

Answer:

  • What does Jesus promise?

  • What hinders believers from hearing Him?

  • How does relationship affect recognition?

Journal your answers.

ACTIVATION 2 — Revelation, Interpretation, Application

Read:

Acts 10:9-20

Peter received a vision.

Identify:

Revelation

What Peter actually saw.

Interpretation

What God meant.

Application

What Peter was supposed to do.

Write your observations.

ACTIVATION 3 — The Source Test

When receiving an impression, ask:

Does it agree with Scripture?

Does it reveal Christ?

Does it produce peace?

Does it align with God's character?

Would wise spiritual leaders affirm it?

Practice using this filter on one recent impression.

ACTIVATION 4 — Listening Prayer Exercise

Spend 15 minutes in silence.

Pray:

"Lord, speak, for Your servant is listening."

Record:

  • Scriptures that come to mind

  • Impressions

  • Thoughts

  • Convictions

Do not force revelation.

Simply listen and journal.

ACTIVATION 5 — Discernment Exercise

Read:

1 Samuel 3

Answer:

  • Why didn't Samuel recognize God's voice immediately?

  • What role did Eli play?

  • What does this teach about mentorship?

Journal your response.

ASSIGNMENT 1

Reflection Paper

"How Do I Know It's Really God?"

Write 2–3 pages discussing:

  • How God speaks

  • The role of Scripture

  • Common sources of confusion

  • Lessons you learned from this teaching

  • Areas where you need growth

ASSIGNMENT 2

Scripture Study

Study three examples:

  • Samuel (1 Samuel 3)

  • Peter (Acts 10)

  • Paul (Acts 16)

Answer:

  • How did God communicate?

  • How did they respond?

  • What lessons can be learned?

Write a one-page summary.

ASSIGNMENT 3

Seven-Day Listening Journal

For seven days:

Spend:

15 Minutes Prayer

15 Minutes Scripture

Journal daily:

  • What Scripture stood out?

  • What impressions did you receive?

  • What questions remain?

Bring journal observations to discussion time.

ASSIGNMENT 4

Hearing vs Assuming Exercise

Review a past situation where you believed God spoke.

Ask:

  • What was revelation?

  • What was my interpretation?

  • What actually happened?

What did you learn?

ASSIGNMENT 5

Accountability Challenge

Share one impression, dream, or Scripture insight with a mature believer.

Ask:

"What do you discern?"

Learn to receive feedback without defensiveness.

MEMORY VERSES

John 10:27

"My sheep hear My voice..."

1 Thessalonians 5:21

"Test all things; hold fast what is good."

James 1:5

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God..."

Memorize these verses this week.

FINAL CHALLENGE

Many people want to speak for God.

Few are willing to spend enough time listening to Him.

The prophet's authority does not come from volume.

It comes from accuracy.

The question is not:

"Can God speak?"

The question is:

"Am I listening carefully enough to hear what He is actually saying?"

Because the safest prophetic people are not those who speak the most.

They are those who have learned to listen well.
